Carey is a former top fashion model who stands at almost 5'10" she was a favorite of American fashion houses like Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. Her father, an accomplished scientist who won the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists' 1979 Scientist of the Year award is a renowned geologist. As a result of his professional career Carey grew up all around the world. The model began modeling for a part-time basis when she was a student attending university at the University of Colorado and caught the eye of a rep for the Ford model Agency in New York. She lived in France for a short time, including Paris as well as Bordeaux. Then she returned to New York for her college studies and to further develop her modeling career. While she was modeling, she was a full time student who was pursuing a degree in literary studies at New York University.
